What to Expect at Your First York Reformer Pilates Class (A Beginner's Guide)

Thinking about trying reformer Pilates in York but not sure what you're walking into? You're not alone. The reformer can look intimidating the first time you see one, with its springs, straps and moving parts. This beginner's guide covers what to expect, so you can turn up to your first class feeling relaxed.

What is reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is Pilates done on a machine called a reformer. It uses a sliding carriage and springs to add resistance. It's low impact and works your whole body, which makes it great for building strength, improving posture and increasing flexibility.

The reformer explained for beginners

Once you know what each part does, it's far less scary:

  • The carriage: the padded platform you lie, sit, kneel or stand on. It slides back and forth as you move.
  • The springs: these set the resistance. More springs isn't always harder. Sometimes fewer springs means your core has to work more to keep you steady.
  • The footbar: the bar at one end that you push against with your feet or hands.
  • The straps: loops for your hands or feet, used for arm and leg work.

You don't need to remember any of this. We will tell you which springs to use and help you set up.
